Digital Media assignment #2: Animated GIFs in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction

Produce at least three short movies that explore themes from the readings (Simulacra and Simulations by Jean Baudrillard, Remix(ing) Re/Appropriations by Eduardo Navas, The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction by Walter Benjamin), films, and discussions from this section of the course. For each short, experiment with explicit or metaphorical references to the content of the course such as semiotics (sign and signifier), simulation and simulacra, remix (creative appropriation), and the way technology affects art and culture. Do more than illustrate these concepts, develop your own language that extends them. Use of appropriated materials is encouraged with the caveat that it should meet the definition of fair use from the Copyright Act of 1976. Specifically, the use of others’ materials should be transformative, not derivative, and/or it should parody (comment on, critique, etc.) the original work(s).

Medium(s): Animated GIFs or Flash movies (SWF or FLVs)
