Course Description

This course introduces students to interface design and programming concepts for creating dynamic internet applications for both practical and artistic ends. You will learn how to program interfaces using PHP and either Actionscript, Processing, or Javascript languages. We will read and discuss various concepts concerning the internet as a public, chaotic, and political space. This class will challenge you to conceptualize and execute projects on the internet using professional tools in order to comment on, critique, or celebrate online culture.

Course Objectives

Upon successful completion of this course you will be able to:

  • Plan, execute and evaluate web projects in a professional environment.
  • Conceptualize and develop idea-driven cultural and artistic projects that acknowledge and exist primarily on the internet.
  • Understand the basics of using a programming language to create internet applications.
  • Purchase and configure a domain name to use with a web host.
  • Install and customize the popular WordPress Content Management System.
  • Think critically about the use of technology for interactive environments.
  • Pursue individual research by proposing and executing an ambitious final project.
